9/11/01: What did we learn from this tragedy ..

Yesterday, I watched again with shock and admiration how the people of New York City handled the unthinkable tragedy and how the family members and the community (all Americans) stood and worked together to overcome the challenge posed by that event 10 years ago!

What is amazing, that the unity and resolve we demonstrated in dealing with this event, is totally lacking in the challenges we are facing now! The all Americans, Washington, and so-called leaders have polarized USA at a such dysfunctional level (with a totally unprofessional behavior by the media, who is not just reporting, but some times encouraging the polarization), that we have lost sense of what Americans stood for and what they have become! I remember very well, that 4 fundamental attributes of Americans were: compassion for fellow beings, amazing creativity, can do attitude (ability to deal with and overcome challenges – remember “Let’s go to Moon in a decade”), and always stay one step ahead of the world! Now the motto is “It is not my fault”; “I am OK, you are not”. “I don’t need to work for America; America need to provide for me”. We are complaining about lack of jobs, but we don’t want to learn new skills, we don’t want to recognise that the new clients do not have “western” thinking mentality and we want our consumption based economy to jump-start without taking into consideration the impact of the globalization perspective.

Our leaders – Democrats, Republicans, Tea Party, Business, Banking, Insurance Industry and Healthcare Industry – have forgotten that we work for America, not other way around! We need more leaders like Bloomberg, Buffett, Jobs who can get America to work proactively, be self-reliant and at the same time be compassionate!

One – One – One One

Today, I thought I will reflect on my observations about what we experienced in Year 2010 and what we hope for the new year 2011!  But that will happen in my next blog!

This morning when I was thinking about the title of this blog, I observed the interesting pattern in today’s date 1/1/11. If we think about it, every one wants to be No. 1! All our individual efforts are striving for getting that place (No. 1) for ourselves! Even our scriptures recommend each individual to focus on the “One” (God)! So today’s date is a good reminder to every one to put individual energies to use in good actions for number 1, to be number 1 and merge with 1 (11)! Isn’t this an interesting way to look at 1-1-11 (One – One – One One)? HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Avatar – Is it just a movie?

Last month , I saw John Cameron’s the movie “Avatar”!  Besides the obvious enjoyment and awesome experience of the 3D effects, watching this movie presented an interesting imaginative future!  It was fascinating to think of the future (Year 2154), and the way the main character was transporting back and forth from human to another (I guess this is a modern demonstration of  “Avatar”, which is little different from the one described in  Hindu mythology and  but a variation of the one now used by computing community – See the definition and the images).

Avatar (Hinduism), manifestation or appearance of a Hindu deity – The Sanskrit noun avatāra is derived from the verbal root tṝ “to cross over”, joined with the prefix ava “off , away , down”.

Avatar (computing), the graphical representation of a user. An avatar is a computer user’s representation of himself/herself or alter ego whether in the form of a three-dimensional model used in computer games, or a two-dimensional icon (picture) used on Internet forums and other communities. For example:

The similarities between these  “Avatars” are that they appear to be something they are not!  However, they end up growing to be one with what they appear to be!  The hero in the movie definitely ended up becoming one with the people of the “Pandora” tribe, even though he was there only as an explorer with a different mission!

In a way, we all are some forms of the “Avatars”, becoming absorbed in the environment we are. May be originally we are more than what we seem to be now! Just wondering …

A Family Event …

Today, I woke up and saw a clip of news on TV about the NFL game between  quarterback brothers – Peyton and Eli !  The announcer interviewed the parents – Archie and Olivia Manning!  It was fascinating to realize that how odd an occurrence (one in a zillion chance) of having three Super Quarterbacks from one family!  We all know about Peyton playing for Colts and Eli for Giants are the quarterbacks who have already won the Superbowl!  But I do remember that Archie was the quarterback playing for New Orléans in 70s and he was recognized as one of  the best quarterback of that decade!  Now we may be awed by the brilliance and luck that  make them successful in such a competitive and high pressure field, but it would be fascinating to realize the talents of Olivia who provided the inspiration to her husband and nurturing love for her sons to become so successful!  We do have to wonder, what these four souls would have done to connect in this life and be a part of one family!  I am sure we all would watch the game tonight, but we would be watching an inspiring event of a family with 4 equally talented members!
